Clayton State defeats Erskine 3 to 1

Box Score Morrow, Ga. – The Lakers of Clayton State University (2-0) scored three second-half goals to defeat the Erskine Flying Fleet (1-1) 3 to 1 in non-conference men's soccer action at Laker Field.

Late in the first period, Erskine's Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) broke a scoreless tie to give the Flying Fleet a 1 to 0 advantage at intermission.  For Settlemire, it was his second goal of the season.

The Fleet's lead was short-lived as the Lakers struck quickly to open the second period, scoring their first goal in just 39 seconds.  Clayton State's Bilal Nikhal fed teammate Arturo Cruz a great pass and Cruz pushed the ball past Erskine's goalkeeper Fiore Costa (Niagara Falls, Ontario, St. Paul Catholic Secondary School) to tie the game at 1 to 1.

Clayton State added the game-winning goal just two minutes later when Cruz found Avery Shepherd open in front of the goal.  It was Shepherd's third goal of the season.

The Lakers took advantage of a pressing Flying Fleet team late in the game to add an insurance goal.

The game was delayed twice due to severe weather (lightening).  The start of the game was delayed an hour and half and the game was halted again in the first half.

Erskine hosts non-conference foe Brevard College this Wednesday.  Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
