Alex Waldthausen (Greenville, SC, J.L. Mann High School) scored his first collegiate goal in just his second minute of play and later assisted on another goal to propel the Flying Fleet to a 2 to 0 opening day win over the Pacers of the University of South Carolina-Aiken on the campus of Clayton State University.
The Flying Fleet demonstrated great teamwork, taking the opening kick-off down the field for a quick score. Junior
Joe O'Neill (Lichfield, United Kingdom, Friary High School) slipped the ball to junior
Ross Henderson (Lincoln, England, William Farr C of E) who found Waldthausen for the quick strike, just 1:20 into the game.
In the thirty-second minute, Erskine added the insurance goal. Waldthausen got the ball past the defender to senior
Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) who blasted the ball into the back of the net.
The Fleet outshot the Pacers 11 to 4 in the first half.
In the second half, the Flying Fleet protected their lead holding the Pacers to just five shots in the closing period.
Erskine goalkeeper
Fiore Costa (Niagara Falls, Ontario, St. Paul Catholic Secondary School), a freshman, earned a shutout in his first collegiate start, recording four saves on nine shots.
Erskine will play Clayton State tomorrow evening. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
