Box Score Mount Olive, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet tallied two first half goals to defeat the University of Mount Olive 2 to 0 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action at Amon Field.
Erskine's two goals came quickly in the first half. In the seven minute mark, Erskine's
Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) corralled a long pass from teammate
Alex Waldthausen (Greenville, SC, J.L. Mann High School) and blasted it into the back of the net for the Fleet's first goal. For Settlemire, it was his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Thirteen minutes later, Erskine's
Joe O'Neill (Lichfield, United Kingdom, Friary High School) cleaned up a shot by teammate
Stian Tsesmetsis (Oslo, Norway, Norges Toppidrettsgymnas) for his second goal of the year. Tsesmetsis' shot was blocked by a Trojan defender and rebounded to O'Neill who finished the scoring opportunity for the Flying Fleet.
In the second half, UMO did not seriously threat to score until the final minute. Desperate for a goal, the Trojans brought their defensive line forward in an attempt to create more scoring opportunities. The Trojans placed two headers on goal but Erskine goalkeeper
Fiore Costa (Niagara Falls, Ontario, St. Paul Catholic Secondary School) stopped both tries. Costa had four saves in the game.
With the win, Erskine climbs to 4-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference. UMO falls to 2-4-2 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Erskine travels to play conference foe Pfeiffer University next Saturday. Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
