Box Score Bristol, Tenn. – The King University Tornado scored three second-half goals to hold off the Erskine Flying Fleet's upset bid this afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action at Park Field.
With thirteen minutes remaining, King's Hulda Sigurdardottir struck a shot over the head of Erskine goalkeeper
Ashton Burgess (Greenwood, SC, Emerald High School) to give King their first lead of the game. It also proved to be the game-winner as King (8-7, 5-4) kept Erskine (3-10-1, 2-7) off the board for the reminder of the game to win 3 to 2.
At the end of the opening period, the Flying Fleet held a 1-0 lead despite being outshot 13 to 6. In the 12
th minute, freshman midfielder
Kate Harrington (Chapin, SC, Chapin High School) nailed a spectacular shot from 25 yards out into the right corner to stake the Flying Fleet to an early 1-0 lead.
The Erskine defense held King scoreless in the first period, thanks in part to five saves by Burgess. Burgess finished with ten saves in the game, the seventh time this season the sophomore goalkeeper has logged double-digit saves.
King opened the second period with the first of two goals by Rachel Thorpe. Six minutes into the second period, Thorpe got behind the Erskine back line and got off a shot that deflected off the charging Burgess into the net to tie the game at 1 to 1.
Erskine retook the lead on senior Rachel Mitchell's first goal of the season.
Mitchell (Griffin, GA, Pike County High School), who played in her first game due to an injury suffered in preseason, scored off a corner kick by Harrington. The ball travelled through the box to Mitchell on the backside who finished it perfectly into the back of the net.
The Fleet's lead was short-lived as Thorpe tallied her second goal of the game four minutes later. Thorpe accepted a pass from teammate Kendyl Baird at the top of the box, turned and fired into the bottom left corner to tie the game at 2 to 2.
Erskine plays their final regular season home game this Tuesday night against Emmanuel College. Kick-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Prior to the men's game that evening, Erskine will honor the senior soccer players for their contributions to their respective programs.
