Box Score Due West S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (6-5-2, 3-2-2) fell to the Bulldogs of Barton College (9-4, 5-2) 3 to 2 this afternoon before a large Homecoming crowd at Huggins Field.
The Flying Fleet struck first to the delight of the home crowd. After Barton failed to clear a free kick into the box, sophomore
Cameron Whitehurst (Chapin, SC, Chapin High School), who came forward from his center back for the free kick, found the ball at his feet and quickly deposited it into the right side of the goal for his first collegiate goal.
The Fleet's lead was short lived as Barton tied the game just three minutes later. Barton's Alex David centered the ball to teammate Alex Blake for the game-tying goal.
In the second half, the Bulldogs tallied two goals and held off the Flying Fleet's late rally. Barton's Dante De Luca ripped a free kick just outside the box over the Fleet's defensive wall into the far upper corner of the goal.
Midway through the closing period, De Luca pushed the ball into box and with the defense collapsing on him, slipped the ball across to teammate Jonathan Rembecki, who scored the game-winner.
Erskine's
Stian Tsesmetsis (Oslo, Norway, Norges Toppidrettsgymnas) pulled the Fleet to within one with his second goal in as many games. Freshman
Alex Waldthausen (Greenville, SC, J.L. Mann High School) beat his defender down the right side and centered the ball to Tsesmetsis. Tsesmetsis placed the ball in the right corner beyond the reach of the diving Barton goalkeeper Jens Madsen Hordvik.
Both goalkeepers finished the day with two saves each.
Erskine plays their last non-conference game this Tuesday when they host UNC-Pembroke. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
