Poor opening night for Fleet, lose 6-2

Box Score Due West, SC – The Erskine Flying Fleet (0-1) surrendered four second half goals as the Anderson University Trojans (1-0) won the season opener for both teams 6 to 2 in non-conference men's soccer action at Huggins Field.

Junior transfer Victor Nirennold (Rennes, France, Lycee Emile Zola) put the Flying Fleet up early with his first collegiate goal in the thirteenth minute.  Nirennold made a swift cutback behind his defender and slipped the ball past the diving goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.  But the Trojans scored the game's next two goals to take a 2 to 1 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The two teams exchanged two goals early in the second half.  Erskine's Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School), the Fleet's leading scorer last season, pounded the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick from senior Jonathan Rutter (Birmingham, England, Fairfax) to cut the Anderson lead back to one at 3 to 2.

Unfortunately, Anderson scored the game's final three goals, including the third goal by Andre Carle to give him the celebrated hat trick.

Erskine's goalkeeperRoberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio) took the loss, allowing 3 goals before leaving with an injury in the sixtieth minute.  He also had four saves.

Anderson's goalkeeper Bo Hoag recorded six saves while giving up the two goals on eleven shots.

With the win, Anderson secures the first point in the Beville Cup competition.

Erskine will look to bounce back against Brevard College this Saturday.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
