Box Score Due West, SC – In their first away match of the season, Erskine battled to a 1-1 draw with archrival Anderson University in non-conference men’s soccer action at Trojan Stadium. Erskine now stands at 2-0-1 on the young season while Anderson remains winless at 0-1-1.
Erskine entered today’s contest looking to begin a season 3-0 for the first time in Coach Warren Turner’s tenure while Anderson University came in search of their first win of the 2012 campaign.
Erskine missed on several scoring chances early in the game, sending two shots just over the crossbar in the first five minutes of play. The Flying Fleet notched the first tally of the game in the 23
rd minute as sophomore forward
Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) received a pass from
Trevor Moreland (Columbia, SC, A.C. Flora High School) at the top of the box lofting the ball into the upper right corner of the goal to give the Fleet a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Anderson captured the momentum pounding out seven shots to the Fleet’s four. Anderson tied the game in the 69
th minute on a goal by Ben Jones, his first of the year. Erskine had two good opportunities to take the lead but Jonathan Rutter’s shot in the 72
nd minute struck the post and Jack Kimber’s blast in 77
th minute sailed just wide to the right.
Neither team managed a shot in the first overtime period and Anderson had two looks in the second overtime but Erskine goalkeeper
Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio) stopped both attempts. De La Vina finished with 11 saves while Anderson’s goalkeeper Lukas Hesse had two saves as the Fleet had difficulty placing their shots on goal.
With the tie, Erskine and Anderson split the first point of the Beville Cup competition. The women soccer teams square off this weekend for the next available point. Erskine is currently in possession of the cup having edged AU by half a point last year.
Erskine travels to Mars Hill College this Saturday. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
