Erskine and USC-Aiken play to a 1-1 draw

Box Score Aiken, S.C. – Stepping out of conference play this weekend, Erskine tied USC-Aiken 1-1 in men’s soccer action.  It is the third tie of the season for both teams with the Flying Fleet now standing at 5-3-3 and USC-Aiken keeping their record even at 3-3-3.

Through 110 minutes of play, the two teams combined for 40 shots but managed to put just seven shots on goal.  Erskine held a slight lead at 22-18.  Erskine goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio) recorded 3 saves while USC-Aiken goalkeeper Joshua Poissant had 2 saves.

USC-Aiken got on the board early in the first half.  In the 15th minute, Pacer’s Jason King lobbed a long pass that Brett Van Pelt ran down and shot the ball into the lower right corner past the Erskine goalkeeper.  USC-Aiken finished the first half with a 9-4 shot advantage.

Erskine gained the momentum in the second half but had difficulty putting their shots on goal.  Erskine blasted 13 shots to USC-Aiken's 7 but it was not until a penalty in the 80th minute that gave the Fleet a chance a tie the game.  Erskine’s Jack Kimber (Manchester, England, Priestnall High School) ripped the ball into the net, his fourth of the season, to tie the game 1-1.

Neither team mounted much offense in the first overtime.  The Pacers managed two shots but were wide of the target both times.
In the second overtime period, the Fleet fired off five shots but again were off target.  Neither goalkeeper earned a save in either overtime period.

Erskine continues to play out of conference as they host local rival Lander University this Wednesday.  Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.  Admission is free to all Erskine home soccer games.
