Newberry's early goal stands up; Fleet lose 1-0

Box Score Newberry, S.C. – Newberry scored the game’s lone goal in the 14th minute of play and held on to defeat the Erskine Flying Fleet 1-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action at the Newberry College Soccer Field.

Newberry set up a nice attack with Julian Feneberg passing to Kofi Kufour who one-timed the ball to Lucas Ferreira at the 18 who nailed the ball just inside the far post just out of reach of the Erskine goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio)

Erskine mounted several counterattacks but could not find the back of the net.  Freshman Ross Henderson (Lincoln, England) put 5 of his 8 shots on goal.  In the end, Newberry held a slight advantage in shots at 20-15. 

De La Vina finished with 7 saves after facing 20 shots by the Red Wolves.  Newberry goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt also finished with 7 saves.

With the loss, Erskine drops to 6-6-3 on the season.

Erskine returns home for their last two regular season games.  On Tuesday, the Fleet host conference rival Belmont Abbey.  Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
