DUE WEST- Mars Hill senior midfielder Giovanni Mainati scored two goals and assisted on a third in the match's opening 18 minutes to lead Mars Hill to a convincing, 5-1 win over Erskine on a scorching hot Saturday afternoon at Huggins Field. Erskine drops to 1-1 on the young season. The Fleet will play at nearby rival Lander University on Wednesday night.
Mainati got the scoring started at the 7:30 mark on blast past Erskine goalie Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain). A munte and 57 seconds later when Mainati made a beautiful pass to Stephen Bivens to put the Lions up 2-1. Mainati struck again at 17:56 on an assist from Isaiah Shafer to push the lead to 3-0. Erskine found a brief ray light tat the 19 minute mark when a Mars Hill player fouled in the box allowing freshman Luke Boyce (Lincoln, England) to score on a penalty kick, his 2nd goal of his young career. Mars Hill waste dno time striking back. At 24:57 Rury Caulfield scored for the Lions on penalty kick after Erskine freshman Peter Savarese (Hilton Head, SC) batted down with hands a certain Mars Hill goal. Savarese was awarded a red card on the play forcing Erskine to play the remainder of the match with ten players. Mars Hill took a 4-1 advantage into the halftime break.
Mars Hill added a fifth goal at 57:20 on a goal by Tom Allison assisted by Regis Mawire to provide the final 5-1 margin. Mars Hill managed 31 shots on the afternoon to Erskine's four.
