Charlotte, NC – Erskine freshman
Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) scored twice to lead the Flying Fleet past Queens University 3-0 tonight in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action at the Queens Sports Complex. Erskine climbs to 5-4-1 overall and 3-2 in conference while Queens tumbles to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in conference.
The Fleet got on the board quickly scoring the half’s only goal in the third minute when Settlemire corralled a loose ball in front of the Queens’ goal and put it past the goalkeeper for his fifth goal of the season.
Erskine outshot Queens in the first half 6-2.
Erskine got their insurance goal in the 61
st minute on a penalty kick by sophomore Jonathan Rutter. It was Rutter’s first goal of the season.
Queens scored their lone goal in the 74
th minute on a penalty kick by Filipe Netto.
Just six minutes later, senior
Cade Weatherly (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) slipped the ball past the Queens defenders creating a one-on-one opportunity for Settlemire. Settlemire lofted the ball over the charging Queens goalkeeper into the net for his second goal of the game and his team-leading 6
th goal of the season. For Weatherly, it was his team-leading 4
th assist on the year.
For the game, Erskine outshot Queens 13-11 while Queens held an advantage on corner kicks at 5-2. Both teams were called for offsides four times.
