Freshmen lead Fleet upset of Limestone 2-0

Gaffney, SC – Led by two freshmen, the Erskine men’s soccer team broke out of a scoring slump to upset Limestone College 2 to 0 at Saints Field.  The Fleet had scored just one goal over in their previous four games, all losses.  With the victory, the Fleet move to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in conference.  Limestone slips to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in conference.

Erskine took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Jonathan Rutter (Birmingham, England, Fairfax) in the 18th minute.  It was his fourth goal of the season.

The Fleet got their second goal early in the second half when freshman Stuart Morrison (Inverness, Scotland, Inverness Royal Academy) hit a shot from 20 yards out for his first collegiate goal.

The Fleet held off the Saints to preserve the 2 to 0 victory.  The Saints outshot the Fleet 22 to 15, including 12 shots in the second half.  Erskine goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, Sam Igmacio)earned the shutout with five saves.

With just three games remaining, the Fleet travel to Coker College this Saturday in a key conference game for home-field advantage in the first round of the conference championship tournament.  The Fleet currently hold a half game lead over Coker for 4th place.  Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
