Newberry, SC- Erskine freshman goal keeper Paige Martz had a remarkable game Friday evening as she posted 12 saves and only allowed one goal during the 1-0 loss to Newberry College. With the loss, Erskine women’s soccer slip to 0-2 while Newberry remains undefeated at 3-0.
Newberry came out firing, putting up 14 shots (7 on goal) during the first half. But Martz and the Fleet defense remain composed as they held the match scoreless for the first half.
The second half opened like the first, with Newberry pushing the pace and trying to find the back of the net with several shots. After several attempts, Newberry’s Ashley Reetz broke the tie in the 67th minute of play as she launched a shot from the top of the penalty area and into the left side of the net to give Newberry the 1-0 lead.
The Flying Fleet regrouped and tightened up their defense keeping Newberry from scoring for the remainder of the match.
Erskine had one good opportunity to tie the match at one, but were unable to control the ball once in scoring position.
Newberry’s goal keeper Emily Rhoades posted one save on the evening and the Fleet were out-shot 23-4.
Erskine will return to action September 12 as they begin conference play by taking on the Lees-McRae Bobcats on the road. Kick off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
