Wilson, NC — Erskine men’s soccer remains winless among Conference Carolinas opponents as they fall to Barton College 2-0 Saturday evening.
Barton freshman Lloyd O"Neill (Fareham, England) and sophomore Paxton Barnes (Wilson, NC) tallied goals Saturday night in the rain as the Barton College men's soccer team ended a 14-game skid in Conference Carolinas play with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Erskine.
The Bulldogs of third-year head coach Matt Akins had not won a league match since beating Coker on Oct. 10, 2007. Barton raised its record to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Erskine fell to 1-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the league. Barton travels to Lees-McRae and Erskine is home with Limestone in 7 p.m. clashes this Wednesday.
O'Neill notched his team-best fourth goal at the 4:30 mark. Senior Chris Tripp (Wilson, NC) made a long throw-in that senior Heinz Guttenberger (Winterville, NC) headed to O'Neill, who finished off the play for a 1-0 cushion.
The teams slogged through the rain for more than 70 more minutes before Barnes made it 2-0 in the 76th minute. Tripp served the ball to O'Neill, who beat his defender just left of the goal and centered it to Barnes for a point-blank shot. Tripp and Guttenberger now share the team lead in assists with three apiece.
Each team finished with four shots on goal. Sophomore Brian Riesenberg (Fort Thomas, KY) recorded three saves for the Bulldogs and Devon Braykovich (Roswell, GA) had two saves for the Flying Fleet.
