Erskine loses to Lander and Mother Nature

Box Score Due West, S.C. - The Erskine Women's Soccer Team opened their 2014 season against a tough opponent in local rival Lander University, who eventually broke through the brilliant defense of the Flying Feet to win the game, 2-0.

The referee with some help from Mother Nature had to postpone the game with seven minutes remaining due to severe weather.

The weather also delayed kick-off by thirty minutes but that did not seem to affect either Erskine or Lander. Both team's entered the field with lots of energy. The Lander Bearcats played well in the first half, but the Flying Fleet were excellent in their defense play, especially goalkeeper Ashton Burgess (Greenwood, SC, Emerald High School).  Burgess recorded eight of her 12 saves in the first half and was in full control between the bars.

The second half started the same way as the first half with the Flying Fleet pressing Lander high up on the field. Erskine's midfielders and forwards put in a heroic effort trying to pressure and gain control of the ball from the Bearcats.

Though Erskine goalkeeper Ashton Burgess seemed unstoppable today, a smashing free kick by Lander's Alexis Rogers found the back of the net in the 56th minute.

Fifteen minutes later a cross from the left side by Lander's Erin Dooley found teammate Sydney Thompson who stuck it into the left-side of the net, making the score 2-0.

With ten minutes left to play, the Flying Fleet almost tallied a score when Jamie Morris' free kick over Lander's defensive wall hit the top of the crossbar.

With seven minutes left on the clock, Mother Nature forced the referee to suspend the game and after a fifteen minute delay, call the game.

Erskine returns to action next Wednesday when they host Brevard College at 5:00 p.m.
