HOW IT HAPPENED
Weather concerns moved this matchup up a day, and both sides were very careful in the opening 10 minutes. However, the Fleet broke through moments later on a nice passage of play that led to
Alexa Harrison playing a ball into the Shorter penalty area with
Evelyn Melnick chasing after it. The freshman forward was knocked to the ground by a Hawks defender inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Fleet.
Hannah DeVincent stepped up to take the ensuing penalty and calmly slotted it into the top left corner to give Erskine a 1-0 lead. Both sides tallied shots throughout the remainder of the first half, but neither team was able to create dangerous chances, so Erskine took its 1-0 advantage into the break. The Fleet came flying out of the gates to start the second half, though, scoring on its first passage of play after the interval.
Alexa Harrison took off with the ball down the right wing and deliver a cross just beyond the back post that was met
Soleil St. Hill, who controlled the ball and rolled it right across the six-yard box, where it was met by
Hailey Anderson who tapped it in to double Erskine's lead. The Fleet remained stout defensively throughout the second half, limiting Shorter to just two shots, as a combination of
Valentina Santana and
Emma Duda in goal helped earn Erskine its second clean sheet of the year.
THE PLAYER
Freshman midfielder
Hailey Anderson logged 50 minutes in the contest and scored the game-sealing goal for the Fleet, finishing off a brilliant team goal just 22 seconds into the second half for her first collegiate goal.
