Erskine edges Columbia College 1-0

Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine College Flying Fleet (1-2) edged out the Columbia College Fighting Koalas (5-2) 1-0 in non-conference women's soccer action this evening at Huggins Field.

The Flying Fleet struck first with a goal in the eleventh minute of the game.  At the 10:52 mark, freshman Kate Harrington (Chapin, SC, Chapin High School) booted a forty-yard shot that bounced over the keeper's out stretched hands and into the goal.  The goal was not only Harrington's first collegiate goal, but turned out to be the game-winning goal as well.

The second half of the game was a defensive battle between the Flying Fleet and the Fighting Koalas.  Both teams controlled the ball in a back and forth battle for possession.  The Flying Fleet's defense held strong, limiting scoring opportunities of their vaulted forwards, Ashley and Amber Tanner.  The Tanners, who are sisters, have tallied 15 of the Fighting Koala's 18 goals this season.

Erskine had 15 shots compared to Columbia College's 10, but the Fighting Koalas placed six of their shots on goal compared to 5 for the Flying Fleet.

Erskine's keeper Ashton Burgess (Greenwood, SC, Emerald High School) had six saves while Columbia College's keeper Morgan McCray had four.

Head Coach Gary Winchester was proud of his team's effort tonight.  "I am very pleased for the girls tonight. I felt that they deserved the win after their strong performance. I feel that we have turned a corner now and we can build on this performance for our future games," said Winchester.

Erskine will host the Lees-McRae College Bobcats this Saturday. Kick-off for this Conference Carolinas match-up is set for 5:00 p.m.  Admission is free to all Erskine home soccer games.
