Box Score Due West, S.C - The Erskine Flying Fleet fell to the Brevard College Tornados 3 to 2 in non-conference women's soccer action this evening at Huggins Field.
After both goalkeepers made terrific saves to preserve the 0-0 tie, Brevard's Sydney Alencewiz drilled a shot from well outside the penalty box over the head of the Erskine goalkeeper
Ashton Burgess (Greenwood, SC, Emerald High School) to give Brevard their first lead of the game. Brevard would take a 1-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The second half saw an offensive explosion as the two teams combined for four goals. Erskine's
Katherine Coleman (Martinez, GA, Lakeside High School) started the fireworks, out racing her opponent to the ball on a long pass then beating the Brevard goalkeeper Jocelyn Springer for the Fleet's first goal in the 45th minute.
A few minutes later, Brevard regained the lead on Katherine Nickels' first of two goals. Nickels beat the Fleet goalkeeper to the loose ball and kicked the ball into the open net.
The Fleet bounced right back as Coleman's pass was deflected by the Brevard goalkeeper to teammate
Tegan Van Rijn (Hawkesbury, Australia, Bede Polding College)Â who took advantage of the open net for her first goal of the season and tying the score at two apiece.
With the clocking ticking down and both teams pressing offensively for the game-winning goal, Brevard's Shannon Bava played the ball perfectly through the Fleet's back line to a racing Nickels, who blasted the ball past Burgess into the net for the game-winning goal.
Brevard had 18 shots compared to Erskine's 8, but the Flying Fleet placed seven of their shots on goal compared to ten for the Tornados.
Burgess finished with six saves while Springer had five saves.
Erskine will host North Greenville University this Saturday. Kick-off for this Conference Carolinas match-up is set for 5:00 p.m.
