Box Score Due West, S.C. – On Senior Night, the Lions of Emmanuel College clipped the Erskine Flying Fleet 3 to 2 tonight in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action at Huggins Field.
The visitors from Georgia took a 2 to 1 lead into the locker room at halftime. Emmanuel grabbed the game's first lead in the 17
th minute on a goal by Emma Tamblyn. Shortly after that, Erskine freshman
Mel Foster (Charleston, SC, Fort Dorchester High School) scored the equalizer on an assist by
Rachel Mitchell (Griffin, GA, Pike County High School), who played in only her second game after an injury that kept her out for most of the season. In just two games, Mitchell has scored a goal and assisted on another one. The Lions regained the lead just four minutes later on some crafty footwork by Noel Samples. Samples tricked the charging Erskine goalkeeper
Ashton Burgess (Greenwood, SC, Emerald High School) and fired the ball into the open goal to for the 2 to 1 lead. Burgess recorded 8 saves on the night.
Five minutes into the second half, sophomore
Heather Bloemsma (Sebring, FL, Home-schooled) lofted a corner kick that
Taylor Bush (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head High School) headed into the goal to tie the game at 2 to 2. For Bush it was her second goal of the season.
Unfortunately, Emmanuel's left wing, Jesse Denney, ran past the Fleet's defensive backline and scored to give the Lions back the lead. The goal marked the end of the scoreboard as the end result was 3 to 2 for the visiting side.
Between the women's and men's games, the Erskine senior soccer players were honored for their hard work and contributions the last four years. Head Coach Gary Winchester started all seven seniors tonight.
Erskine's new record is now 3 -11-1 with two games left in the regular season. Erskine will continue their play against the Trojans of Anderson University tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Fleet will play their last conference game on Saturday against Limestone College.
