Box Score Due West S.C. – Before a large Homecoming crowd, the Erskine College Flying Fleet (3-9-1, 2-6) lost to the Barton College Bulldogs (7-3-2, 4-3-1) 3 to 1 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action at Huggins Field.
Despite limited offensive opportunities, the Flying Fleet were the first to score. Late in the first half, junior
Hayley Rogers (West Columbia, SC, Lexington High School) broke free down the left side of the box and centered the ball to sophomore
Taylor Bush (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head High School) who blasted the ball into lower left corner. For Bush, it was her first collegiate goal. The Flying Fleet took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The Bulldogs came back 10 minutes into the second half on a goal by Kathryn Smith from the right side of the field and tied the game back at one. This sparked their offense as they scored a mere three minutes later on a shot from the corner of the field that bounced off the far post and into the goal to take the 2-1 lead.
Later in the second half Nikki Helton capitalized off a rebound from the Erskine goalkeeper
Ashton Burgess (Greenwood, SC, Emerald High School) to provide the insurance goal. Barton's Lane Brooks fired off a shot that Burgess batted away only to fall at the feet of Helton.
Barton's defense continued to hold in the second half, grounding the Flying Fleet. The Fleet took only four shots in the half.
Burgess recorded 12 saves on 24 shots.
