Box Score Bluffton, S.C. – Trailing 4 to 1 the Erskine Flying Fleet (0-5) scored two goals in eight minutes to draw within one but could not find the back of the net again, losing 4 to 3 to the Sand Sharks of USC-Beaufort (3-3-1) this afternoon at Fin Land.
It appeared USC-Beaufort would cruise to an easy victory after leading 2-0 at intermission and tacking on another one on a penalty kick midway through the second half.
With just under twenty minutes left,
Brittany Jakiela (Columbia, SC, Spring Valley High School) found
Hayley Rogers (West Columbia, SC, Lexington High School) who tallied the Fleet's first goal in three games.
Unfortunately for the Fleet, the Sand Sharks scored their four goal just a minute and half later as Jessica Tooley added her second goal of the game.
Erskine trimmed the lead back to two in the 76
th minute when Rogers struck again for her second goal of the season. And with just five minutes remaining, freshman
Lucy Jeffs (Bordon, England) scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from
Katherine Coleman (Martinez, GA, Lakeside High School) to pull within one.
The Fleet made one last offensive push but an offsides call ended the threat.
Erskine goalkeeper
Ashton Burgess (Greenwood, SC, Emerald High School) continued her stellar play between posts, recording 11 saves on 24 shots. The sophomore goalkeeper has now recorded double-digit saves in her last three games.
Erskine will open conference play this Saturday as they travel to Wilson, North Carolina, to face the Bulldogs of Barton College.
Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
