Erskine comes up short against Pfeiffer

Box Score Due West, S.C. – Fighting for home court advantage in the upcoming conference tournament, Erskine pushed Pfeiffer to five sets before losing 3 to 2 (25-19, 19-25, 17-25, 25-15, 12-15) in the final conference game of the season for both teams.

The Fleet needed to upset Pfeiffer, the #2 seed in the upcoming tournament, to secure the #4 seed.  Instead with the loss, the Flying Fleet finish tied with Limestone, who owns the tie-breaker and will travel to Gaffney, South Carolina, this Saturday to play Limestone in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament.  The game time has yet to be determined at this time.

Erskine got off to a great start pulling away from Pfeiffer early to win the first set comfortably 25 to 19.  Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) provided the spark, knocking down 3 kills and a block for four of the Fleet’s first five points.

Falcons turned to their senior Caleb Brophy, who crushed 16 of his game-high 24 kills, to win the next two sets.

But the Fleet tightened their defense at the net, recording 5 blocks while stymieing Pfeiffer’s attack, resulting in an easy 25 to 15 win.

The last set went down to the wire.  With the score tied 10-10, Pfeiffer scored the next two points, highlighted by a kill by Eric Edelman.  That point proved to be the difference maker as Pfeiffer held on to win the set 15 to 12 and the match 3 to 2.

Freshman Mike Michelau (Bristol, WI, Westosha Central High School) led the Fleet with 20 kills, 6 digs and 5 blocks while Kawa finished with 17 kills, 4 digs and 7 blocks.

Erskine concludes their regular season at 13-15 and 9-7 in conference.
