Women's Soccer pummels NGU 4-2

Box Score Due West, SC – Erskine snapped a three-game losing streak by pummeling the Crusaders of North Greenville University 4-2 in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer action at Huggins Field.

The Crusaders struck first scoring in the game’s first two minutes of play.  Leah Ward’s shot banked off the far post back to teammate Caroline Baker who slid the ball past the Erskine goalkeeper for the game’s first tally.

Erskine responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.  A hustling Rachel Mitchell (Griffin, GA, Pike County High School) scored the Fleet’s first goal as the NGU goalkeeper failed to control the ball in front of the goal.  Mitchell tapped the loose ball into the open goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Six minutes later set senior middle fielderMolly Harpe (Anderson, SC, T.L. Hanna High School) accepted a corner kick at the top of box from teammate Emily Brown and drilled the ball through a crowd of defenders into the back of the net to put the Fleet up 2-1.

In the thirty-second minute, Brown scored her first goal of the season, placing the ball just inside the right post.

Erskine added a fourth goal midway through the second half.  Harpe blasted a shot just inside the right post off a pass from teammate Kimrey Angotti-Smith (Goose Creek, SC, Pinewood Prep School).

Erskine surrendered an own goal a few minutes later as an Erskine defender attempted to head away a centering pass.
Erskine held a huge advantage in shots and shots on goal at 15 and 11 to 9 and 6 respectively.

Erskine goalkeeper Katie Lyle (Duluth, GA, Peachtree Ridge High School) allowed two goals on nine shots while recording four saves.  North Greenville goalkeeper Taylor Kelley faced fifteen shots surrendering four goals with seven saves.

With the win Erskine improves to 2-3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference.  The Crusaders remain winless at 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference.
