HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first half-hour of what was a muggy and overcast match, very little separated the teams with the defenses controlling the game. However, UNC Pembroke took the lead on a penalty kick in the 40th minute, putting Erskine in 1-0 deficit at the break. As the rain picked up during halftime and into the second half, the Fleet's quality of play continued to grow as well. Erskine continued to defend well and started creating even more attacking chances in the opening period of the second half. However, the Braves doubled their lead against the run of play in the 60th minute, making the climb back even more uphill for the Fleet. But, Erskine continued to battle and were rewarded minutes later. In the 63rd minute,
Rebekah Wiles had a deflected ball fall into her path high up the pitch, moved the ball to her left foot and delivered a looping ball toward the goal that went up and over the Braves goalkeeper and into the far corner of the goal to get the Fleet back within one. Erskine outshot the Braves, 9 to 7, in the second half in their relentless search of an equalizer but ran out of time, falling narrowly to the East Division leaders in Conference Carolinas.
