Newberry beats Erskine 4-2

Box Score Due West, S.C. – Newberry scored three unanswered goals in the second half to beat Erskine 4-2 in non-conference women’s soccer action at Huggins Field.

Erskine scored the game’s first goal, ending their three-game scoreless draught in the 28th minute of the first half.  Senior  Molly Harpe (Anderson, SC, T.L. Hanna High School) passed the ball from the top of the box to Hayley Rogers (West Columbia, SC, Lexington High School) on the left side who one-timed it across the face of the goal.  Ashley Reeves (Zebulon, GA, Pike County High School), who sprinted in from the right side, blasted the ball back into the far post for her second goal of the season.

Newberry tied the game shortly before close of the first half.  Brayden Miller centered the ball from the right corner to teammate Brittany Singleton, who placed it perfectly just inside the post.

Erskine broke the tie early in the second half on a penalty kick by senior Kimrey Angotti-Smith (Goose Creek, SC, Pinewood Prep School).  It was her first goal of the season.

In less than two minutes, Newberry went from being down a goal to leading by one.  Gabrielle Brodie headed back Miller’s shot which had hit the crossbar to tie the game at 2-2.  A minute and change later Miller slipped the ball past the diving Erskine goalkeeper Ashton Burgess off a corner kick to give the Wolves a 3-2 advantage.

The Wolves added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute.  Brodie intercepted an Erskine pass and sprinted down the field kicking the ball into the lower left corner for her second goal of the game.

Erskine drops to 3-11-1 on the season while Newberry climbs to 6-7-1.

Erskine hosts Queens University this Saturday for Homecoming.  Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
