Due West, SC – The Erskine Women’s Soccer Team lost to archrival Anderson University 1-0 tonight in non-conference women’s soccer action at Huggins Field. Anderson evens their record on the young season at 2-2 while the Flying Fleet slip to 1-2.
In typical fashion of a rivalry game, the game was decided on an outstanding play. Anderson’s Carrie Settle received a long pass with her back to the goal at the top of the box. With a flick of her foot, Settle lofted the ball backwards over her head and the Erskine defender to her teammate Jessica Kleinberg, who was racing past, to create a one-on-one situation. Kleinberg quickly shot the ball over the top of the charging Erskine goalkeeper Katie Lyle (Duluth, GA, Peachtree Ridge High School) to put Anderson up 1-0.
In the second half, both teams had opportunities but could not put the ball in the net. Midway through half, Anderson had a header off a corner kick hit the crossbar and another shot strike deflect off the right post. Erskine was able to clear both times. Late in the half, Erskine pressed forward in an attempt to tie the game but could not punch the ball into the goal.
Anderson held a slight advantage in shots and corner kicks at 14-10 and 7-4 respectively.
Anderson’s Kaitlyn Neipp had 7 saves while Lyle finished with 6 saves.
With the victory, Anderson secures the first point in the Beville Cup competition.
Erskine begins conference play on Wednesday when the Fleet host Coker College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
