Brevard, NC – The Erskine Women’s Soccer Team kicked off their 2011 campaign in grand fashion with a 3-2 comeback victory in double overtime against the Tornados of Brevard College at the Brevard College Soccer Field in Brevard, North Carolina.
The Flying Fleet notched the first goal of the game when junior Emily Brown (Clemson, SC, Daniel High School) blasted a shot from 25 yards out past Brevard goalkeeper Brittney Webster. Brevard came back to take a 2-1 lead into the half scoring two goals in the last eight minutes of the first half. Francie Blair raced in from the right side and to control the rebound off teammate Alyssa Caracena’s shot to tie the game at 1-1. Just three minutes later, Chelsea Freeman scored on another deflected shot by Erskine goalkeeper Katie Lyle (Duluth, GA, Peachtree Ridge High School) to give the Tornados a 2-1 advantage.
The Fleet forced overtime when senior defender Emily Wentzky (Anderson, SC, T.L. Hanna High School)received a loose ball in front of the goalie’s box and placed in beautifully in the left corner to tie the game at 2-2. It was Wentzky’s first collegiate goal.
After battling through a scoreless first overtime, junior Molly Harpe (Anderson, SC, T.L. Hanna High School)scored with 1:09 remaining in the second overtime to give the Flying Fleet the 3-2 victory over the Tornados. Harpe picked off a pass as the Tornados tried to clear the ball and launched a shot past the diving Brevard goalkeeper.
Lyle earned her first collegiate victory in goal, facing 20 shots with 10 saves.
The Fleet held a slight advantage in shots at 22-20.
Erskine faces local rival Lander University next Wednesday, September 7th, starting at 4:30 p.m.
