Due West, SC – Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS) and Shawn Glover (Columbia, SC, Richland Northeast High School) hit back to back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a one run deficit and propelled the Fleet to a 7-5 victory over the 19th ranked Georgia College Bobcats Monday afternoon at Grier Field.
The Bobcats scored three run in the top of the first with RBI singles by Tanner Funk and Travis Echols to take an early lead. They would tack on two more runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to five. The Fleet would answer with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, with the big blow being a three run home run by Drew Willingham (Hodges, SC, Greenwood HS). The score would remain 5-4 through the next four and a half innings.
With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the eighth, Cameron Yost (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) would draw a walk to put the tying run on base. McCarthy would then blast his sixth home run over the right center field wall to give Erskine the one run lead. Glover would follow up with a solo shot over the centerfield wall to extend the lead to two. John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) would then come into the game and pitch a scoreless ninth to get his second save of the season.
McCarthy led the Fleet at the plate going 2-4 with the homerun and two RBI’s and Willingham was 1-3 with the three run blast. Andrew Guest (Easley, SC, Easley High School) (7-3) picked up the win in a dominating performance out of the bullpen. He allowed just two hits and no runs in five innings of work while striking out 10 batters.
