Erskine Baseball | Fleet roll past USC Beaufort

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College baseball team (11-17, 8-7 CC) defeated USC Beaufort (4-21, 0-15 PBC) by a score of 14-3 at Grier Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Fleet used offensive explosions in the second and sixth innings, behind a three-hit, three-RBI game from Cole Savage, in addition to a well-executed bullpen game to run away from the Sandsharks in convincing fashion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Erskine returned home to start a five-game home stand on Tuesday, which also marked the much-anticipated return of Alex Heintz on the mound. The Conference Carolinas leader in strikeouts two years ago as a freshman pitched for the Fleet for the first time in 681 days. Although USC Beaufort opened the scoring in the top of the first, the Fleet immediately answered back in the bottom half with a passed ball that allowed Carson Yates to score and a RBI single from Ricky Dober to put the Fleet in front. Heintz pitched just the first inning as he eases his way back from a long-term injury, and the Fleet bullpen pieced together the final eight frames. Offensively, Erskine continued its dominance in the second behind the help of some Sandshark errors as well as a two-run single from Pierce Radke to lead 8-1 after just two innings. A Stephen Kriner sacrifice fly and a "little-league" home run from Yates then pushed the lead to 10-1 in the third. In the sixth, an RBI single from Danny Villafane was followed by the finishing touches from the Fleet's offense on the day, a towering three-run home run off the bat of Cole Savage, making it a 14-3 game.

THE PLAYER
Cole Savage made just his fourth start of the year on Tuesday and took full advantage of his opportunity, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs. Savage finished his afternoon with a no-doubt three-run blast over the right field fence in the sixth inning that capped a 14-run outburst for the Fleet.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine welcomes in the University of Mount Olive (11-14, 6-9 CC) for a three-game series, starting Friday at 2 p.m.
