#17 Erskine Completes Sweep of Paine

Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet swept both games of a double header from visiting Paine College Saturday afternoon, winning game one 13-5 and game two 26-6.

In game one, Erskine would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS) would hit a two out single and then score on a double by Will Huff (Suga Hill, GA, North Gwinnett HS). In the top half of the third, the Lions would take advantage of two Erskine errors to go up 5-1.  The Fleet would then go on to score 12 unanswered runs over the next four innings to take the victory.

Freshman Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) led the Fleet going 3-4 with a double, triple and three runs driven in, while Huff was 2-2 with a home run and two RBI’s.  John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) was 2-2 with a double and two RBI’s and Brian Laznik (Chardon, OH, Lakeland CC) was 2-3 with two triples and drove in two runs.  Andrew Guest (Easley, SC, Easley High School) picked up his first win of the season allowing just two hits and striking out six in three and two-thirds innings of relief.

The Fleet offense didn’t slow down in game two, scoring four runs in the first.  The big hit of the inning was an opposite field two run home run by Smith.  Paine would once again take advantage of two Erskine errors in the third to tie the game at four.  In the bottom half of the inning, Laznik would lead off with a triple and score on a double by Smith to give the Fleet the lead.  After a walk to McCarthy, Huff blast a home run down the left field line to give Erskine an 8-4 lead.

Smith continued his outstanding performance at the plate going6-6 with two doubles, a home run, seven RBI’s, and was a triple short of his second cycle in as many days. Casey Winckowski (Oregon, OH, Owens CC) was 3-4 with a home run and three runs driven in and Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) finished 3-5 with two RBI’s and his first collegiate home run.  Freshman Robbie Brown (Dillon, SC, DillonHS) picked up his first college win allowing two earned runs in five innings and striking out 10 batters.

With the win, the 17th ranked Fleet improve to 9-0 and will host Augusta State Tuesday at 2:30.
