Anderson, SC – Anderson grabbed an early lead and hung on to defeat Erskine 2 to 1 at Trojan Stadium in non-conference women’s soccer action. With the win, Anderson snapped a six-game winless streak to improve to 4-5-1 while the Flying Fleet dropped to 2-6 on the season.
In the first two minutes of the game, Anderson’s Jessica Kleinberg worked herself free in front of the Erskine goal to stake Anderson to an early 1-0 lead.
Midway through the first half, Erskine’s Kimrey Angotti-Smith (Goose Creek, SC, Pinewood Prep School)brought the visiting crowd to their feet when she ripped a shot only to be stopped by the diving Anderson goalkeeper. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
In the 75th minute, Anderson’s Katelyn Conover knocked a deflection into the goal to put the Trojans up by two.
The Fleet made it interesting when freshman Stephanie Gauthier (Irmo, SC, Dutch Fork High School) scored her first collegiate goal to cut the lead to one in the 87th minute.
Anderson narrowly outshot the Fleet 11 to 8. Both goalkeepers finished with 4 saves on the day.
The Fleet take on Queens University at home this Saturday at 2 p.m.
