DUE WEST, S.C. – Erskine College announced on Friday it will suspend the offering of women's lacrosse in 2023-24.
The athletic department cited participation numbers as the major reason for the suspension of the program. This past season head coach Jason Cody resigned just a few days before the team's opening game. The season's final two games were cancelled when the team had only 10 remaining healthy players.
Erskine started women's lacrosse in 2009. The program won 32 games in 15 seasons, highlighted by a 9-8 record in 2014. The 2014 team is the only team to qualify for the Conference Carolinas Tournament during the past 15 years. Since the inception the program battled with a shortage of players having to recruit off other Erskine athletic teams to fill out a roster nearly every season.
School officials noted the program was being suspended, not terminated. The hope is to sponsor women's lacrosse again in the near future with hopes of drawing more participation to the sport on campus.
