DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet Acrobatics & Tumbling program will relaunch beginning in the Fall of the 2023 season, Vice President for Athletics
Mark Peeler announced on Tuesday morning.
Â
"We believe Acrobatics & Tumbling should be an integral part of our sport offerings in Fleet Athletics," Peeler said.
Â
Erskine Acrobatics & Tumbling officially began its inaugural season in the Winter 2020, hosting a meet against Converse University on February 8. The team competed in two more matches that year before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the remainder of season in mid-March.
Â
The program was shut down the following Fall as a result of the lasting impacts of COVID-19 but is set to return as co-coaches
Carly Egan and
Corbin Huntley will spend this coming year practicing and recruiting before planning to compete in the 2023-2024 academic year.
Â
Huntley is currently the head coach for the Fleet's Cheerleading and Dance Teams and was the head coach of the Acrobatics & Tumbling program during its first two seasons.
Â
Egan is currently a senior on the Cheer team but was recruited to Erskine for Acrobatics & Tumbling and spent her first two years here on the team.
Â
"I look forward to the relaunch of Acrobatics & Tumbling and have full confidence in the efforts and enthusiasm of Carly to grow this program into a highly respected and thriving piece of our athletic program," Peeler said.
Â
A native of Branson, Missouri, Egan was a gymnast for 13 years and was a regional champion in Vault in 2018, as well as a state champion for Floor and All Around.
Â
"I knew [Erskine] was the place for me when I sensed Christ's true presence on campus. I fell in love with not only the people but the campus itself. There is something special about Erskine and you can feel it. I knew I wanted to coach since I was 16 and started working at my local YMCA, which is where I trained," Egan said.
Â
As a freshman on the team, Egan was a key member, competing in all 3 meets as part of the Fleet's Compulsory Acro, Pyramid, and Toss teams, the 6 Element Acro team, the Open Pyramid team, the Trio Tumbling team, and participated in the Open Tumbling event.
Â
"I am beyond blessed and excited to give some young women the opportunity I missed out on. I can't wait to see them grow in their time at Erskine, spiritually, emotionally, academically, and athletically," Egan said.
Â
Interested potential recruits and high school students should contact
Carly Egan (carly.egan@erskine.edu).
