Box Score 2 The Erskine men's volleyball team went 2-0 on day 1 of the 2016 Coker Invitational Tournament on Friday evening. The Fleet made a quick come back , after loss at Barton College, to win two matches, both in 4 sets, against Alderson Broaddus (27-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-18) and Coker College (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16).
In the opening match of the tournament the Fleet defeated the Battlers, but had to fight for extra points in two of the sets. The Fleet were led by Mike Michelau and Roberto Perez Vargas who had 21 and 17 kills respectively. Omar Melendez also contributed greatly to the Erskine offense with 11 kills and hitting .563. David Grandy added 48 assists and Michael Schneck punched in 13 digs.
The second set was another hard fought match with the Fleet taking the first two sets and then the Cobras come back and won the third. However, it was the efficiency of the offense and blocking that would help Erskine to take control of the match in the fourth and final set. The Fleet finished this match with a hitting percentage of .330 and 11 blocks to Coker's only .202 and 6 blocks.
The Fleet were, once again, led by seniors Michelau and Perez Vargas with 25 and 14 kills each. Grandy dished out 42 assists and Schneck added 10 digs.
The Fleet will not play any matches today and will resume play at home this Friday, March 11th once again against Coker College at 7pm.
