Box Score Gaffney, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (19-6, 15-3) were shocked tonight by the Limestone Saints (13-14, 11-7), losing in five sets 3 to 2 (25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 29-31, 11-15) in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at the Timken Center.
After breezing through the first two sets, Erskine found themselves in a dogfight in the next two sets, losing both by two points 25 to 23 and 31 to 29. In both sets, the Fleet had an early four point lead only to see the Saints rally to tie and eventually win both sets by the minimum two points.
With the crowd anticipating the upset, the Saints grabbed an early two point lead in the fifth set off a kill by Bruno Kretzschmar and a Fleet attack error. The Saints held the lead and won the set along with the game on a kill by Dylan Lavner.
Erskine's
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) led all-attackers with an impressive 32 kills and 9 digs. Sophomore
Roberto Perez (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) contributed 19 kills and 8 digs. Setter
David Grandy (Laguna Hills, CA, Laguna Hills High School) had an impressive night, handing out 57 assists.
The Saints were by a trio of players. Kretzschmar and Goyco both had 16 kills while Lavner had 11 kills, 5 blocks and 8 digs.
The loss had no impact on the Fleet's seeding who will be the #2 seed in the upcoming Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball Championship Tournament. Erskine will host #7 Barton this Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m.
The win had bigger implications for the Saints who earned the #4 seed and will host King University this Saturday in the opening round of the conference tournament.
