Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (1-14) dropped a heartbreaker to the Columbia College Fighting Koalas this afternoon, losing 10 to 9 in overtime in women's lacrosse action at Huggins Field.
Columbia's Kendra Blackstock scored a free position goal with seconds remaining in the first portion of the overtime period and the Koalas held the Fleet scoreless in the second half of overtime to win 10 to 9.
In the second half, the Fleet overcame a 5 to 1 halftime deficit to send the game into overtime. Trailing by two goals, Erskine scored two goals to tie the game at 9 to 9.
Alexandria Butler (Hilton, NY, Hilton Central High School) found teammate
Marley Llinas (Annapolis, MD, Broadneck Senior High School) in front of the goal and slammed the ball home with a quick shot. Thirty seconds later Butler tied the game at 9 to 9 to send the game into overtime.
Earlier in the second half Erskine had overcome a 5 to 1 halftime deficit to take their first lead of the game at 7 to 6. Senior
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) scored her team-high three goals and assisted on the goal that gave the Fleet the lead.
At halftime, Burns was recognized for her contributions to the Erskine Women's Lacrosse Program. Burns, who will graduate in May with a degree in Athletic Training, has led the Flying Fleet in scoring all fours year, including a single-season record of 71 goals last year. Overall Burns' 213 career goals ranks 17
th all-time in NCAA women's lacrosse history.
Erskine concludes their 2015 campaign next Wednesday against the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
