Box Score Columbus, Ohio – The Erskine Flying Fleet (17-5) narrowly pulled their second upset of a ranked opponent this season, losing to #11 Ohio State University Buckeyes (17-6) 3 to 1 (18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-25) tonight in non-conference men's volleyball action at Saint John Arena.
After dropping the first set, Erskine stormed back to win the second set 25-20 and tie the match at 1 to 1. Junior
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) led the Fleet upset attempt with six kills while fellow junior
Neal Stanley (Apopka, FL, Apopka High School) drilled four of his season-high 10 kills in the second set.
Erskine came within three points of winning the third set and taking a 2 to 1. Trailing by two at 23 to 21, Erskine's
Travis McGrand (Yucaipa, CA, Yucaipa High School) knocked down a kill to pull the Fleet within one. The Fleet had opportunities to score of their next two attacks, but the OSU front line blocked the Fleet's attack for the game-winning points. The Buckeyes height proved to be a factor as they recorded 18 blocks on the night, the most by any of the Fleet's opponents this year.
Michelau filled the stat sheet for the Fleet, recording a team-high 15 kills along with an assist, two aces, five digs and 2 blocks. Stanley and
Roberto Perez (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) finished with 10 kills each. Perez also had a team-high 8 digs.
Ohio State also had a trio of players finish with double-digit kills. Michael Henchy finished with a game-high 20 kills while Nicolas Szerszen and Miles Johnson had 14 and 12 kills respectively. Driss Guessous had a game-high 11 blocks.
After playing their last three games on the road, Erskine returns home to host in-state conference foe North Greenville University this Monday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
