Pfeiffer defeats Erskine 3-1; snaps 6-game win streak

Box Score Misenheimer, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University Falcons (11-3, 10-1) have proven to be a real nemesis, defeating the Erskine Flying Fleet (13-4, 9-2) 3 to 1 (27-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21) for the second time this season in men's volleyball action at Merner Gymnasium.

Erskine's last loss was to Pfeiffer back on February 10th.   Today's loss snapped a six game win streak for the Flying Fleet.

All four sets were closely contested and not decided until late in each match.  After both teams blew four point leads in the first set, Pfeiffer won the set 27 to 25.  With the score tied at 25 to 25, Pfeiffer scored the last two points on a kill and block by Sonny Hirini.  Hirini had five of his game-high 21 kills in the set.

In the second set, neither team had more than a two point lead until the final points.  Leading 22 to 20, Pfeiffer scored three of the set's final four points to win 25 to 21.  Pfeiffer's Micheal Brewer drilled a kill and, following a service error, Pfeiffer's Jonathan Martinez knocked down the game-winner.

With the third set tied 22 to 22, Erskine won the next three points to capture the set.  After a Pfeiffer attack error, Erskine's Roberto Perez (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) crushed a set from David Grandy (Laguna Hills, CA, Laguna Hills High School) for a two-point lead.  Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) won the set for the Fleet with an ace.  Michelau currently leads the conference in service aces per set.

Pfeiffer appeared ready to run away with the fourth set, racing out to an early four point at 9 to 5.  The Fleet climbed back into the game and were within two after a kill by Neal Stanley (Apopka, FL, Apopka High School) made the score 23 to 21.  Pfeiffer got two kills to win the set and match.

The Fleet had three players finish with double-digit kills.  Perez led the Fleet with 17 kills while Michelau ended with 12 kills.  Stanley drilled a season-high 10 kills on 17 attempts.

Erskine returns to action next Thursday against the visiting Emmanuel College Lions.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
