Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (1-3) fell to the Wingate University Bulldogs (2-2) 20 to 9 this afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Huggins Field.
Wingate used a balanced offensive attack to grab a 9 to 5 lead by halftime. With the game tied 2 to 2, Wingate scored five unanswered goals to take a 7 to 2 lead over the Flying Fleet. Five Wingate players scored during the run. Erskine's
Mackenzie Brown (Brentwood, TN, Brentwood High School) stopped the skid with her first goal of the game on an assist from
Alanna Carvallo (Nashville, TN, Father Ryan High School).
Erskine's
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) tallied two more goals to bring the Fleet within three but Wingate's Jaclyn Chiesa found the back of the net as the buzzer sounded to put the Bulldogs up 9 to 5 at intermission.
In the second half, the Bulldogs continued to pressure the Fleet goal, scoring three straight goals to start the second half. Logan Bounds found Brittany Andrews on a cut to the goal for the first tally and Laura Swanson added the second goal a few minutes later. Madison LaBarbera capped off the 3-0 run with a free position goal.
At that point, Wingate used the clock and kept Erskine from mounting a counter run.
The Bulldogs won the game 20 to 9 with ten players scoring in the game. Andrews led the Bulldgos on the day with five goals while Bounds finished with 3 goals and an assist.
For the Fleet, Burns ended the day with five goals while Brown and Carvallo had two goals each.
Erskine is scheduled to play at Lees-McRae College this Saturday at 2 p.m. However, with the approaching winter storm into the North Carolina mountain region, the game may be moved to Erskine. Please check the Erskine website for more details.
