Due West, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey Crusaders (3-5, 1-1) edged the Erskine Flying Fleet (0-2, 0-1) 5 to 4 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.
The three doubles matches suggested the match would be a close one.
Jason Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) clipped Connor McMahan and Juan Baez 8-5 at #1 doubles while
Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) and
Andre Andre (Setubal, Portugal) lost by the slim margin of 8 to 6 at #2 doubles.
The two teams split the six singles matches, giving the Crusaders the 5 to 4 victory. Eddie Gullino and Alan Pearce prevailed in straight sets while Mathewes prevailed in the third set tie-breaker to win his match 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6).
Harris took his opponent to three sets but lost the decisive third set.
Erskine is scheduled to travel to Newberry on Monday.
