DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine Men's and Women's Tennis programs officially named Matt Shumate as the next head coach on Tuesday.

"We are excited about the new era of Erskine Tennis with Matt in the leadership role," Erskine Director of Athletics Mark Peeler said. "He will bring high energy and a desire to succeed into both the men's and women's programs along with further promoting the high Christian morals we seek at Erskine."

Shumate has built a successful coaching career at the high school level, where he has started and developed tennis programs into championship-caliber teams. His teams have won multiple region championships, and he was named Coach of the Year in 2024. His experience includes building programs from the ground up, developing strong team cultures and helping student-athletes reach their potential both on and off the court.

"I'm extremely excited and honored to take over the men's and women's tennis programs at Erskine College," Shumate said. "Erskine has had some great coaches in its history, and I hope to build on that tradition and continue moving these programs forward. We are extremely excited about all of the new guys who have joined the program, and they are ready to compete and represent Erskine at a high level. I'm looking forward to building a strong culture, developing our student-athletes and creating something the entire Erskine community can be proud of. I can't wait to get started."

Shumate was a collegiate student-athlete at North Greenville University, where he earned a degree in Education in 2019. He was a member of the varsity tennis team and earned Academic All-Conference honors.

He also brings a strong background in education, having worked in education since 2019. His experience in education has helped develop his leadership, communication, mentorship and student-development skills.

Shumate will lead the revival of the Erskine Men's Tennis program, which returns for the first time since 2018, as well take the helm of a women's program that has reached the last three NCAA Regionals.
