DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College Flying Fleet family celebrates the life of Vardon Cox, who passed away Wednesday afternoon at the age of 83.
Â
Vardon Cox, a 1964 graduate of Erskine, was the Fleet's longest serving coach in the school's history, leading the Men's Tennis Team in Due West for 45 years. He also was involved in various key roles throughout the college, including the Director of the Watkins Student Center, and participated heavily in the local community, coaching baseball and tennis.
"Vardon Cox will always be one of the great legendary figures of Erskine College," Erskine Director for Athletics
Mark Peeler said. "The lives he touched and influenced along the way were extraordinary. He was a graduate who dedicated his career to making his alma mater a better place. Vardon Cox's impact is evidence of a life well-lived as a servant of his Savior. We pass along our deepest sympathies to the Cox family."
Cox amassed exactly 500 wins during his time at the helm of the Erskine Men's Tennis program and helped lead the Fleet to appearances in the NAIA and NCAA National Tournaments. In 1998, Cox led the Fleet to an NCAA Southeast Regional title and an appearance in the NCAA National Tournament, both firsts in Erskine Men's Tennis history.
Arrangements are not yet final and are being handled by Harris Funeral Home in Abbeville.
