Box Score Belmont, N.C. – After dropping the first set, the Erskine Flying Fleet (6-1, 4-0) roared past the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey (2-3,1-2) to win the match 3 to1 (23-25, 30-28, 25-22, 25-20) tonight in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at the Wheeler Center.
The Fleet knocked down a season-high 70 kills in the match. Sophomore
Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) ripped a game-high 30 kills on 54 attempts to lead Fleet attack. Juniors
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) and
Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R., Colegio San Ignalio de Loyola) contributed 20 and 10 kills respectively.
The Abbey claimed the last two points to win the first set 25 to 23. Anthony Pippen knocked down a kill for game point and the Crusader defense got Michelau to hit wide for the game winner.
Erskine needed extra points to claim the second set and the match's momentum. Perez claimed game point and the Erskine defense got The Abbey to commit an attack error for game point.
With the momentum in hand, Erskine claimed the next two sets for the victory. Perez smashed eleven of his match-high 30 kills in the third set and added five more in the match-clinching fourth set.
The Crusaders were led by Nolan Albrecht's 14 kills, 7 digs and 6 blocks.
Erskine's
Michael Schneck (Milwaukee, WI, Marquette University High School) handed out a career-high 64 assists to direct an efficient Fleet attack that hit .308 on the night.
Libero
Juan Varona (Toa Baja, P.R., Bayaman Military Academy) led the Fleet defensively with 13 digs.
Erskine will seek to extend their 6-game win streak next Tuesday against the visiting Cobras of Coker College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
