Box Score Banner Elk, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (9-8, 7-4) got a career-high 30 points from sophomore
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) to beat the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College (5-12, 4-7) 86 to 79 tonight in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action at Williams Gymnasium.
Stuger also dominated the boards, pulling down a season-high 13 rebounds, including 8 offensive boards. For Stuger, it was her second straight game to post a double-double.
After leading the entire first half, the Fleet appeared set to cruise to an easy conference victory. The Fleet extended their five point halftime lead to ten points in the opening minutes of the second period behind a couple of free throws by
Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA, Governor Mifflin High School) and a steal and layup by
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School).
To the delight of the home crowd, the Bobcats crawled back to tie the game with less than ten minutes to play. LMC's Niroska Perez drilled a three-pointer to pull within one and, following a Fleet free throw, Keri Blecher tied the game on a drive to the basket.
Two minutes later, Erskine's
Ashley Mull (Belmont, NC, South Point High School) hit a 3-point shot to give the Fleet the lead for good. Senior
Haleigh Spaulding (Ocala, FL, Vanguard High School) put the game out of reach, hitting a jumper to put the Fleet up by six.
The Fleet controlled the boards behind Stuger and senior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School), out rebounding the Bobcats 47 to 33. Potter also tallied a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bobcats were led by Perez's 23 points and 4 assists. Teammate Kabrina Truesdale scored 16 points while handing out 12 assists.
