Defense carries the Fleet to win

Box Score Due West, S.C. – Behind a strong defensive effort, the Erskine Flying Fleet (7-8) defeated the Yellow Jackets of Allen University (3-12) 59 to 46 tonight in non-conference men's basketball action at Belk Arena.

The Fleet held the Yellow Jackets, who averaged over 70 points per game on the season, to a measly 18 of 48 (37.5%) from the floor, including just 5 of 18 (27.8%) from behind the arc.  The Fleet also forced the Yellow Jackets into 21 turnovers on the night.

In the opening period, the Fleet found themselves trailing by seven at 17 to 10 after Allen effectively used their full court press to generate several easy baskets.  Following a timeout, Erskine took better care of the ball while picking up their defensive effort.  The Fleet limited Allen to just six points over the last eleven minutes and took a 27 to 23 into the locker room at intermission.

Erskine forced Allen into three turnovers on their first four possessions to open the second half and stretched their lead to double-digits.  The closest Allen would come in the second half is five points as the Erskine defense continued to pressure Allen into turnovers and low percentage shots.

Offensively the Fleet got another strong performance from freshman Ray Lock.  Lock led the Fleet with 15 points, going 7 of 15 from the floor.  Senior DeShaun Hall returned to the lineup to score 14 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists after missing the previous game due to an injury.

Allen's Richard Wilson came off the bench to lead the Yellow Jackets with 8 points.

Erskine will play their next four games on the road.  This Saturday the Fleet travel to Tigerville, South Carolina, to play the Crusaders of North Greenville University.  Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
