Box Score Due West, S.C.- Tonight's Conference Carolinas men's soccer matchup between Erskine and Lees McRae ended in a 3-3 tie after fighting through two overtime periods at Huggins Field.
Late in the second half, Erskine's
Joe O'Neill (Lichfield, United Kingdom, Friary High School)Â put the Fleet up three to two in the 74
th minute on a brilliant header off a corner kick from teammate
Luke Boyce (Bungay, Suffolk, Bungay High) that looked to be the winning goal for the Flying Fleet.
With just a little over five minutes remaining, LMC's Scott Alford scored his second goal of the game on a nice crossing pass from teammate James Galvani that knotted the game at 3 to 3 and would be the final goal of the game.
In the two overtime periods the two squads combined for eight shots but only one would be on target resulting in an impressive save by Erskine goalkeeper
Fiore Costa (Niagara Falls, Ontario, St. Paul Catholic Secondary School).  LMC's Marvyn Rieger headed a cross right in front of the Fleet goal that Costa got a hand on just enough to deflect it past the right post to preserve the 3 to 3 tie.
The first half belonged to the Fleet completely scoring two goals that put the Fleet up going into half time leading two to one. Erskine defender
Josh Heafield (Barnstaple, England, PETROC College) started the scoring with an absolute rip from just across mid field that found the back right corner of the net in the 30
th minute. This goal in the early in the first half gave all the momentum to Erskine and they took advantage of it. Shortly after the first goal, Erskine's
Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) sent a header into the back of the net in the 36
th minute to put the Flying Fleet up by two.Â
The Bobcats cut the lead to one just two minutes before halftime. Alford headed home a pass from teammate Jordan Wright.
In the second half, the game became very physical which gave the larger Lees-McRae players an advantage, scoring all three goals of their goals in the second period.
Erskine's next game is against local rival Lander University this Wednesday. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
