Box Score Chicago, Ill. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (21-8) could not slay their "Goliath" in Stanford University (23-8) as the Flying Fleet lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-16) tonight in the 2014 NCAA Collegiate Men's Volleyball Tournament hosted by Loyola University at Gentile Arena.
Stanford's size at the net proved to be the difference, blocking 13 Erskine attack attempts and forcing the Fleet into 22 attack errors. Conversely, the Fleet managed just two blocks, a season-low.
After taking a 6-point lead on a couple of 3-0 runs, Stanford tallied the last five points of the first set to win 25 to 14. Stanford's outside hitter Brian Cook knocked down the game point to secure the win.
The Flying Fleet were within two points in the second set until Stanford used a 7-3 run to take a 20 to 14 lead. Erskine scored the next two points on a kill by freshman
Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) and a block by Perez and
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) before Stanford closed out the set with another 5-0 run.
After falling behind 3-0 to open the third set, Erskine climbed back to within a point at 12-11 on a kill by Vargas. At that point, Stanford used their defense to ignite a 13 to 5 run. The Cardinals got four of their five blocks in the set during the run.
Sophomore
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) led the Flying Fleet with 9 kills and 8 digs while Vargas finished with 8 kills.
Stanford got 12 kills from their All-American Brian Cook and teammate Conrad Kaminiski knocked down 4 kills on 6 attempts while recording a game-high 6 blocks on defense.
Stanford advances to play #2 Brigham Young University on Thursday.
