Sumter, S.C. – The #7 seed Erskine Flying Fleet (4-16) lost 5-0 to #2 King University Tornado (14-7) in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Championship Tournament held at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.
The loss signifies an end of an era as Vardon Cox retires as the Head Men's Tennis Coach after 45 years at the helm.
Despite the score, the Fleet narrowly upset the Tornado. In the three doubles matches, King barely edged Erskine in all three matches.
Jason Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) lost 8 to 5 at #1 doubles while
Andre Andre (Setubal, Portugal) and
Robert Clarke (Due West, SC, Belton-Honea Path High School) fell 8 to 6 at #2 doubles. In the final match,
Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and
Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) were edged 9 to 8.
Even in the singles matches, Erskine was leading in four of the six matches when the match was concluded.
King University will advance to the semi-final round to face #6 Barton College, who upset #3 North Greenville University 5-2.
