Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet's first winning season came to end today as the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey defeated the Fleet 9 to 2 in the Quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament at Alumni Field.
The Crusaders contained the Fleet offense, holding the Fleet scoreless through the opening period. The Crusaders scored five goals to give themselves a comfortable 5 to 0 lead at intermission.
After surrendering a goal to start the second half, Erskine's
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) put the Fleet on the board with her 71
st goal of the season in the 25
th minute. Senior
Sarah Tibbits (Marietta, GA, Sprayberry High School) added the Fleet's other goal in the 16
th minute on a nice pass from freshman
Ali Cole (Duluth, GA, Duluth High School). For Cole, it was her 34
th assist on the season, a team record.
The Crusaders tallied a total of four goals in the second half to win the game 9 to 2 and advance to the semi-final round.
Katy Connery led the Crusader offensively with 4 goals while teammate Kassie Easter added a goal along with 2 assists.
The Fleet offense could muster just 16 shots in the game. Erskine had difficulty transitioning from defense to offense, effectively clearing the ball just 16 of 26 attempts.
