Erskine sends West and Cox out winners

Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (4-15, 3-5) sent senior Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and Head Coach Vardon Cox out winners in their final home tennis match, upsetting the Crusaders of North Greenville University (9-8, 5-3) 5 to 4 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.  For Coach Cox, it was his 500th career victory.

West and his doubles partner Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) played a valiant game against NGU's Sjors van Eck and Marcelo Yshikawa but lost 8 to 6.  NGU also won at #2 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into the six singles matches.

West ignited the Fleet's comeback downing his opponent in straight sets at #1 singles.  Pearce, Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School), and Jason Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) also won in straight sets to give the Flying Fleet the stunning upset victory.

Head Cox Vardon Cox is retiring at the end of this season after coaching men's tennis at Erskine College for the last 45 years.

Erskine will compete in the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament starting next Friday, April 25th.
